Remember when I told you that ABC was taking a very risky gamble by replacing beloved soaps All My Children and One Life To Live with the horribleness that are the reality shows that replaced them? Well it turns out that I was more than right and this is not just a soap fan talking this time, it's a businessman.
From an article in Ad Week“Many ad buyers prefer original scripted programming to other formats, which has benefited cable networks before Hallmark.” Let that sink in for a second, despite the fact that reality is cheaper to produce, many if not most ad buyers would rather buy time in a scripted show and not those horrible reality shows that the networks seem to be so fond of. No wonder the reality shows are so cheap to produce, they have to be to make any money.
That article is about Hallmark Channel possibly getting into the scripted show game. I personally hope they do, and I hope they do in both primetime and daytime. AMC and OLTL are ripe for a comeback to TV, and with the network developing a talk show for Marie Osmond , as well as another one it would help the network with synergy. The good will that the network would gain by bringing back our soaps should not be discounted and the synergy that could be reaped would be reward in and of itself.
Maybe as this news starts to sink in around the industry, we can start getting back to QUALITY, WELL WRITTEN scripted shows.
