Yesterday was a little more special for me. Yes it was the start of the new year, and in my eyes the beginning of a new cycle in my life but that's for another rant. No yesterday I also celebrated the second birthday of my baby, sometimes the thing that get me up in the morning, this site. Now before you guys start getting concerned, I'm not depressed or anything, but there are days when I would love to just stay in bed under my covers.
Generation Gossip started as just an idea back in 2009. I wanted to write, and I have always loved celebrity gossip, so why not fuse the two, I thought. I put it off because I was working full time and didn't want to give up the steady stream of money for something so unsure. I contemplated doing it in my spare time but thought it would be unfair and waited to start. Then in August I learned that I would be losing my cushy job, and it was then that I really started looking into starting my own site. I went into this blindly and with many assumptions.
The first posts began when I was hung over on January 1, 2010. The very first post was about Kathy Griffin uttering the "F" word on CNN. I adapted the style of just telling the news rather than adding commentary, which a lot of other bloggers do, its something I grapple with every day. Should I start adding in my opinion or should I leave that for the Royal Rants? One day I will come to a conclusive decision, maybe with the help of you all my beloved gossipers. Anyways from there I decided that I would do x amount of stories every day.
One of the assumptions I had made was that advertisers would be lining up to pay me money to have a spot on my site. Luckily I was smart enough to file for unemployment and keep searching for work because that was not to be. As with everything that I do, I started doing a ton of research and learned that you had to have a certain amount of hits or ad clicks to make the money.
Well I thought, I will get millions of hits, just by posting, The first day I got 10 hits. By the end of the first week, I was up to about 40 hits and I was thrilled. yes I was pompous but I always go into a new job with an abundance of confidence. Each week since then I have watched my beloved site grow in hits and popularity. It warms my heart every time I see a new person commenting or a big fan let me know what they thing, I'm looking at you MMC.
Part of gaining new fans is experimenting with different things, like reporting on soaps or introducing Crazy Soap Lady Talks, one of my favorite columns. Do I know what I will discover in 2012, no. Thats the best part of doing this site is that it allows me the opportunity to grow and to learn, to experiment and to discover new things that interest me, as well as you guys.
