Every year around Halloween all of my friends start talking about what they will be dressing up as for the holiday. Inevitably they turn to me and ask, almost as if they don't already know the answer. I haven't dressed up or done anything to celebrate All hallows eve since I was 13 years old.
It might sound strange to people, but even as a child growing up, I hated this day. I mean sure I liked choosing the costume when I was allowed to but the rest of it just reeked to me. Going around to different houses basically begging for candy was not my idea of a good time. My sisters acted as if they would never get candy again if they didn't get to go out on this one night.
On my 13th birthday I put my foot down, so to speak and told my parents that I would not be putting on a ridiculous outfit again. Boy did that bite me in the butt when I bought what I thought was a good looking pleather, flame outfit. I had just turned 21 OK, no judging. In any case Halloween rolled around and true to my word I did not get a costume or go out trick or treating. Instead my mom had asked me ot hand out the candy to any kids that happened to stop by the house.
I agreed to that under the stipulation that she knew that I would be partaking in the candy also. I even cleverly devised a system, for every piece i gave to a kid, I gave one to myself. That evening I settled in and tried to watch a scary movie but the little, adorable rug rats came to the door ever 5 seconds so I finally gave up on the movie.
After that night I have refused to decorate, pass out candy or have anything to do with the holiday. It's not that I hate it necessarily, I just don't find the same value in it as other people do. The best part of Halloween for me is The Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors
