I love soaps. Of course this is no surprise to anyone who reads the site, as I believe that soaps and the stars should be treated just like every one else in the industry. That got me to thinking about the state of soaps, especially since this week we said goodbye to As The World Turns.
Now first I must confess I was not a fan of ATWT. I tried watching it, as my crush on Van Hansis kind of dictated it but alas it never caught me. However that doesn't lessen the sadness I feel about the shows cancellation and exit from the airwaves. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be a writer, specifically a head writer for soaps. In the beginning it was because I loved the way all the stories seemed to climax at just the right time, and everyones lives would twist into a new direction. Plus the divas, I just loved the divas.
Which makes the passing of ATWT even harder to take. Their main heroine Lily was played by Martha Byrne for over 2 decades and left a few years back when contract negotiations broke between her and the show. Noelle Beck took over the role but as the show began it's journey to the finish line, it would have made fans very happy to see Marthas familiar face in the role that she helped to make so iconic.
Also making fans of the now defunct soap mad, is the conclusion to the gay storyline that in recent years have helped propel the show in the ratings. In recent months Luke had been dating Doctor Reid but alas the good, cranky doc was killed off in a horrific train wreck. While the material is Emmy bait (and Van had better win for his portrayal of Luke) it has left a bad taste in the mouths of die hard fans. See not only did Luke lose new boyfriend Reid but he never was given the chance to reunite with his true love Noah. See gay characters really aren't given the same treatment.
