"Daytime is alive and well!" Iconic words from an Icon! Susan Lucci announced this just before the lead actress nominees at last weeks Emmy's. Truer words have never been spoken, even though things look bleak right now I believe something will happen to prove to everyone that soaps are not a dying genre.
As broken hearted as I am about All My Children likely coming to an end, I refuse to believe that daytime dramas are about to breath their last breath. Many said that the sitcom was dead but thenshows like 'The Cosby Show', 'Roseanne',and 'Cheers' rolled around and breathed new life into the genre. Likewise I think networks need to look at ways to save soaps, think outside of the box guys!!!
I've already told you guys about one idea I have, though there are plenty more where that came from. The one thing that I think every soap producer, writer, executive needs to remember is that daytime audiences will go on any kind of ride with you as long as there is a relationship at the core of the story. Passions was a wacky soap but the many fans of the show loved cornerstone couple Theresea and Ethan, so they would g=(literally) go to hell and back.
The relationship at the core of the story, show, whatever does not have to be romantic either. Think about it, the reason Sex And The City endures as a classic is not because of one love story but because of the love that the four women shared with one another. As I work on some of my projects and certain "beta" readers give me feedback its funny that they prove my point time after time. I ask why do you like this story so much and they say well I like that this character and that character did this or that. Finally it dawned on me, they behave like real humans that care about one another!!
Anyone who loves the daytime soaps, I urge you to have faith someone, something will come along and resurrect our beloved genre! Who knows maybe it could even be me, teaming up with Lifetime!!!
