Today is the day, the day when we lose the broadcast version of my beloved All My Children. To most people this is nothing, it means nothing. To me though this is a really hard time, a rough patch because these characters are certainly fictional but they have been invited into my house, into my living room 5 days a week for the last 21 years.
Back when I was still in High School, I would tape AMC, so that when I got home from work, I could watch it. I would pick up dinner, then race home and press play on my TV/VCR combo. I would watch as Erica dealt with whatever her crisis Du jour was and secretly wonder why in the world she didn't just marry Dimitiri or go back to Adam already. It became a part of who I am, I work it into every day conversation and yes most people look at me like I'm crazy but thats OK.
Even when the show was dreadful, I still pulled myself together and watched it. During the Chuck Pratt years I rallied, trying to get people to watch and voice their discontent constructively. Certainly he was destroying the fabric of the show but some of his stories actually had some potential I believe.
And now, just when the show got its groove back, when its better than it has been in a very long time, we have to say goodbye. It's a farewell none of want to say but we are being forced to, its going to be a long few months til Prospect Park saves us from despair. We love you All My Children!!!
