Let’s Talk: What Makes A Gay Icon?

Last week after the “Real Housewives of New York” newer star Sonja Morgan declared herself a gay icon, on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live! When I read that, my vodka laced Orange Juice flew out of my mouth. I kid, I kid, there was no OJ in my vodka. But the thought occurred to me, who died and made her Madonna?

Artist like Madonna, Cher (two posts in a row woot!) and Britney Spears have been in the public eye for quite a while and have earned the status of gay icon from us. However for a Real House Annoyance to declare herself an icon makes me a little sick to my stomach. The aforementioned singers actually have talent and did not label themselves icons, rather we hoisted the title upon them. So therefore I say we take back the self imposed title from Sonja and make her work a little harder for it, harder than shopping all day and being the grand marshall in the Marriage Equality parade. Those are great things but do not make an icon.

What say you gossipers, What Makes A Gay Icon in your book?

I agree RE.I always liked Sonja when ever i watched RHONYC but it seemed this was all about her.And she was rude to Simon who was supposed to make a speech. At least that's what we saw.And a real icon doesn't have to toot her own horn!

Exactly mmc!!! I don't watch The Real Housewives but certainly have respect for them, but you shouldn't give yourself titles. IMHO
