Back before babies plotted to kill their mother, before crude drawings of elementary kids stirred controversy, we had a heroine named Daria Morgendorffer. She was dry, sarcastic and had 'low self esteem'. She was every teen in the 90's including yours truly. Maybe thats a bit of an overstatement, but her popularity was overwhelming. Now finally after 8 years the complete series is available on DVD.
Released this past Tuesday, I bit the bullet and watched all of the episodes for my beloved Gossipers. The series stands up to the test of time, most of the jokes are timeless. With social stories ranging from self esteem to drugs the series proved time and again there was nothing safe from it's cynical eye. The musical episode has to be the best satire ever written, and it should be made into a full fledged stage musical
The series however picks up steam when Daria betrays her best friend Jane by kissing her boyfriend Tom. The writers took this soap opera story and turned it on it's head. Instead of focusing on Daria and Toms relationship, they instead brought Daria and Janes friendship under the microscope. It was during this storyline which stretched over a season, maybe a season and a half that it really occurs to you, Daria and Jane's bond is the heart and soul of the show.
If you were a fan of MTV in the late 90's to early 2000's then get yourself to the nearest store and enjoy this piece of our youth, as not many other shows spoke to our generation the way Daria did. Long Live the Morgendorffers!!!!
